Finding Focus: Managing Distractions in ‘Quiet’ Neighborhoods

Interruptions are a problem everywhere there are people. At the office or home, there is always something that will interrupt your progress as a programmer or other creative pursuit. It’s a serious problem in most work-at-home professions. Traveling to the outer limits may seem like a good idea, but not practical. Some may choose a quiet neighborhood full of older people. A “sleepy” neighborhood may not be what you’re after.

Why Pick A Retirement Neighborhood?

I consider a retirement neighborhood where most people are close to or presently an empty nester. There are plenty out there in small towns and suburban nooks and crannies. Mine is a dead end street with a handful of houses on it. Often, they look so serene. My neighborhood seemed that way.

You pick these neighborhoods for less noise, less trouble, and more headspace. Remember, that’s why you’re here. That’s not what you will likely get, but that’s the goal. Sometimes, you may even get some friendship. For me, that was tough because you have to like the sportsball. I don’t. There is beer guzzling and wine making, so it’s not a complete loss.
